So, how do install freifunk?
You can install freifunk on many different kinds of routers.
- First, you will want to read the README to know if your router is
supported and which firware you need.
Let's assume you have a WRT54GL. (If you don't; please consult the README
for specific instructions.)
- Download the file openwrt-g-freifunk-1.6.29-en.bin
to your Desktop or a directory
where you can find it.
- Connect your router to your computer.
- Point your browser to 192.168.1.1 (or whatever you might have
changed it's address to.
- Login to your router. Default username=admin and password=admin.
- Click on "Administration"
- Click on "Upgrade Firware"
- Click on "Browse" and find the file you just downloaded
(openwrt-g-freifunk-1.6.29-en.bin for example).
- Click on "Upgrade."
- Don't touch anything for five minutes or you will brick your
router!!! (There is a progress meter. Wait until the progress meter
finishes and you see the 'power' and 'dmz' lights on the router start
blinking and then stop blinking.
- Reconnect to your router.
freifunk is now installed.
Now you should configure your freifunk
router(s).
.
- Or you can click
here for a copy of a document available at
http://wirelessafrica.meraka.org.za/wiki/index.php/DIY_Mesh_Guide.
This guide recommends using DD-WRT in
conjunction with freifunk
firmware. freifunk by itself should work or work behind another
router running X-wrt.
- Here is the recommended walk-through
from
freifunk-texas.net. (The walk-through is 'as is' and there is no
warranty or guarantee or promise of suitability for any purpose.)
